French in Paris June 24-July 23, 2012 Grade 10 French programme in France – There will be two courses offered leading to Ontario grade 10 credits, valid in all Ontario schools including Ashbury: grade 10 Core (FSF2D) and Extended (FEF2D) French.
Prerequisite FSF2D: Core French, Grade 9, Academic or permission of the Department. Prerequisite FEF2D: Extended French, Grade 9, Academic or permission of the Department. Other students who are interested to join the programme (gr. 9 immersion students or students currently in grade 10) will not receive credit. However, they will receive intensive coaching by Dr. Emmanuel Hérique during the first week towards the DELF-DALF examination. The DELF-DALF are official French proficiency certifications awarded by the French Ministry of Education. The DELF ("Diplôme d'Etudes en Langue Française") and DALF ("Diplôme Approfondi de Langue Française") consist of 6 diplomas independent from each other that follow the six levels of the Common European Framework of References for languages and they are internationally valid. Dates: June 24-July 23, 2012 Overview: This 31-day Grade 10 tour offers 90 hours of classes taught exclusively in French and 25 hours of guided historical visits conducted in French. Both the Extended and the Core French courses will enable participants to develop their French-language skills in an immersion setting and deepen their understanding and appreciation of French culture. Exploring a variety of themes, students develop and apply critical thinking skills in discussion, in their analysis and interpretation of texts, and their own writing. Extended students planning to enroll in the IB programme in grade 11 French (FEF3UB) in the fall will have to read one literature work on their return in August. The book will be provided by Dr. Hérique prior flying back to Ottawa. Besides visiting the cities of Nice, Saint-Malo, Strasbourg and Paris, there will be a few excursions by train/bus, including: CÔTE D’AZUR-RIVIERA (Cannes; Monaco; Grasse); NORMANDY (Mont-Saint-Michel; Deauville and Trouville); ALSACE (Colmar); Flanders (Arras; Vimy); ÎLE-de-FRANCE (Versailles). We will also have excursions to four other European countries: ENGLAND (St. Helier, Jersey Island); GERMANY (Kehl, cycling there and back from Strasbourg, across and along the Rhine river); SWITZERLAND (Basel); ITALY (Cuneo, Piedmont). The course fee is $8,400 (airfare is included: flight with Air Transat). Early bird fee of $7,400 if registered by February 15th, 2012. This fee covers: Air transportation from Montreal to Nice, and back from Paris to Montreal, with a coach Ottawa-Montreal, return; 90 hours of French instruction; all books and teaching materials (except the grade 9-10 regular textbook Espaces plus the exercise book Espaces for Core French, which the students must bring with them); 25 hours of guided visits; all transportation within France and to our four European destinations, by 1st class train and bus; sightseeing and entertainment; sports activities (kayaking, bicycling,…); cultural activities (theatre, concert, movie theatre); accommodation in Nice (rooms of four with a balcony at a cozy “Relais International de la Jeunesse” with a private swimming pool/diving board, located in the plush residential neighborhood of Cimiez Hill); accommodation in Saint-Malo (rooms of four at a youth center, one block away from an immense sandy beach); accommodation in Strasbourg (single rooms at a private University residence in a heritage building, centrally located by the cathedral); accommodation in Paris (single rooms in a heritage building used as a charming, private university residence run by Sisters, in the very heart of Paris); insurance (liability; full medical coverage that includes repatriation); all breakfasts, all lunches and evening meals, with the exception of 4 dinners. In Grasse: Molinard Perfume factory. 4 cultural visits while staying in Saint-Malo: Fort National; Limoëlou (Jacques Cartier’s Manor); Saint-Vincent’s Cathedral (Jacques Cartier’s tomb, at the place where he kneeled before setting sail for his first voyage across the Atlantic); Benedictine abbey at Le Mont-Saint-Michel. 9 cultural visits while staying in Strasbourg: Historical Museum located into the city’s 16th century slaughterhouse; Notre-Dame Cathedral (13th century) and hike up to its platform (332 steps); Oeuvre Notre-Dame Museum (statuary masterpieces from the cathedral); Archeological Museum; La Petite France, the medieval tanners’ district; Kronenbourg Brewery, founded in 1664. Boat Cruise around the moat that surrounds the medieval city, up to the European Parliament and the European Court of Human Rights. Mr. Eric Lavergne is from Timmins, Ontario and a proud Franco-Ontarian. A graduate of Ottawa University with a Bachelor degree in French Literature and Education, Eric has been teaching for 8 years, two of which at Ashbury College. He is also a don at the boys’ residence and excels at being a positive role model for adolescents. Ms. Natalie Therrien is originally from Ramore, a small community in Northern Ontario. A graduate of Algonquin College in Civil Engineering, she is bilingual in French and English. She has volunteered for numerous organizations in the Ottawa area including Can-Skate (teaching children ages 3-5 to skate), Russell Association of Performing Arts (helping backstage) and more recently, Roger’s house (assisting the Personal Support Workers).
